2021 – Another Year Of Great Progress

2021 – Another Year Of Great Progress

Last Updated on July 23, 2025 by Johann Van Rensburg

With COVID still preventing large fund-raising gatherings, we are very grateful to report that even so, we are continuing to make great progress at Grace Orphanage.

This is only possible through the continue and very generous support of our donors. – THANK YOU!

We Started Off The Year With The Largest Project That We Have Ever Attempted

After a ground-breaking ceremony attended by the local Governor and dignitaries from the area, the crew started with foundations for the Reading Centre. Progress has been slow and steady with many delays through the rainy season; however, the quality of construction has been very good. Completion expected at the end of January 2022.
This Reading Centre, or rather a Learning Centre, will be an opportunity for Grace Orphanage to impact the community around the orphanage. Our plan is to teach widows and single moms to read, basic math skills, and after 3 months, add teaching of business principles. The 9-month program will end with a micro business loan to help each of the women start her own business.

Our Staff Are Key To Our Success

Although we have a staff member in each home as a house Mom (for the girls’ house) or Dad (for the boys’ house), our managing staff with their own families do not have living quarters on site. Our focus the last part of the year was to ensure that the dedicated staff members also have a safe place to call home. We are excited that with a very generous donation from Oceanside Church in Nanaimo, we were able to start our first staff home on site in August. This house is earmarked for David and his family, who run the orphanage and had faced major flooding this past year in their rental suite.

Harvest Time

The soil at Grace Orphanage is excellent for growing just about anything. Under Hosea, the Orphanage Manager’s direction, in August the children harvested rice and in September the cabbage crop was ready for picking by Winama and Daniel. The Orphanage use as much as it can from the harvest and the surplus is sold to fund the next crop.

We Welcomed A New Family Member

When Emedi was one year old, he was found in an abandoned building by a poor, elderly lady. She could not properly care for him.  An Auntie from Grace Orphanage saw him on the street with swollen tummy, hands, and feet. She told the staff at Grace Orphanage, who arranged for him to get medical help. He was immediately admitted to hospital in a state of severe malnutrition. Two weeks later, he is still struggling, but on a slow road to recovery. He will join the Grace family as soon as he is well enough to go home.

Christmas Is Always A Time To Celebrate

When the children at Grace Orphanage were asked what they wanted for Christmas, it was almost unanimous: clothes and underwear. Our donors stepped up and each child received a new outfit and two sets of underwear. Thank you to all who donated.
