Congo War Update: Uvira Fighting and Food Crisis

Last Updated on January 1, 2026 by Johann Van Rensburg

The ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to place civilians in extreme danger. Despite moments of hope, the situation around the city of Uvira has once again deteriorated. Armed clashes, food shortages, and mass displacement are affecting thousands of families, including children supported through Grace Orphanage.

This update outlines the current situation on the ground, the impact on food security, how children are being affected, and the ongoing response made possible through the generosity of donors.

Renewed Fighting Near Uvira

Recently, there was cautious optimism when the M23 armed group announced plans to withdraw from the city of Uvira. Unfortunately, this good news did not materialize. The proposed withdrawal was dependent on a neutral United Nations force taking control of the area, which has not happened.

As a result, fighting has resumed just a few kilometers south of Uvira. Government forces of the DRC are attempting to re-capture the city, while armed groups continue to maintain pressure. Once again, civilians are trapped in the middle of active conflict, forced to flee their homes or remain hidden with little access to basic necessities.

The security situation remains unpredictable, and fear is widespread among families who have already endured years of instability.

Impact on Food Supply

One of the most urgent consequences of the renewed conflict is the collapse of food supply lines into Uvira. M23 forces have closed all access routes to the city, cutting off critical deliveries.

Under normal circumstances, more than 70% of Uvira’s food supply arrives by road from Bujumbura, Burundi, and by boat from Tanzania. With these routes blocked, markets are nearly empty, supply levels are dangerously low, and food prices have almost doubled.

Reports from communities surrounding Uvira indicate clear signs of severe hunger. Families are skipping meals, children are showing signs of malnutrition, and many displaced people have no reliable source of food at all. What was already a fragile food system has now become a full-scale humanitarian emergency.

Impact on Grace Children

The children supported by Grace Orphanage have been deeply affected by the conflict, even though they are currently safe. Children like David and his family are staying in a safe house located close to the Burundi border. While the area remains secure for now, daily life has been significantly disrupted.

Schools in the region have been cancelled indefinitely due to safety concerns. This has left children without education, structure, or a sense of normal routine. Days are long and uncertain, and the emotional toll of displacement and fear continues to grow.

Despite these challenges, the children are showing remarkable resilience. Instead of attending school, they are spending their time helping others. The children assist in preparing food packages that are distributed to displaced families who have lost everything. This simple act of service provides not only practical support, but also a sense of purpose and hope during an incredibly difficult time.

Grace Orphanage’s Response to the Crisis

In the midst of this escalating crisis, Grace Orphanage continues to respond with compassion and determination. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the orphanage has been able to significantly increase its support to displaced families.

Weekly food assistance has now expanded to 110 displaced families, many of whom have no other source of help. These food packages are a lifeline, offering nourishment and relief during a time of extreme scarcity.

However, safety concerns have forced some painful decisions. The Saturday feeding program, which normally provides meals to over 600 children, is currently on hold. The decision was made to protect both staff and children while conditions remain unstable.

Even with these limitations, Grace Orphanage remains committed to serving the most vulnerable as safely and effectively as possible.

People Caught in the Middle

As fighting continues around Uvira, it is civilians who bear the greatest burden. Families are displaced repeatedly, livelihoods are destroyed, and access to food, education, and healthcare becomes increasingly limited.

The situation serves as a reminder that behind every headline are real people struggling to survive day by day. Their resilience is extraordinary, but they cannot face this crisis alone.
